Installation problem? Confirm that Windows 10 is not in S mode


Windows 10 in S mode is designed for security and performance, exclusively running apps from the Microsoft Store. If you want to install an app that isn't available in the Microsoft Store, you'll need to switch out of S mode.Switching out of S mode is one-way. If you make the switch, you won't be able to go back to Windows 10 in S mode.There's no charge to switch out of S mode.

LockDown Browser is not launching? Please try these troubleshooting tips.

  • Make sure LockDown Browser for ALEKS is installed by following the instructions on the Installation article. Lockdown Browser for ALEKS must be installed even if you already have a different version installed that is used by your school. You can have two versions of LockDown Browser installed on your device. You can test if LockDown Browser is installed on your computer and test your webcam settings for Respondus Monitor at .
  • Certain spyware detection and anti-virus software may interfere with Respondus LockDown Browser and/or Respondus Monitor. Please visit the Respondus articles below for recommended steps:
    • 0x-AWS-xxx Unable to connect to Respondus Server (AWS) – Error message “Unable to connect to Respondus server (AWS):
  • Follow the instructions below to determine if you have programs running in the background that may interfere with Respondus LockDown Browser and/or Respondus Monitor.
    • Windows Users: Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and select the Task Manager. The Task Manager displays any programs running on the computer. To end an open program, select it and click End Task.
    • Mac Users: Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, or press Command-Option-Esc. This will summon the Force Quit Applications window. Select the application or program and click Force Quit.
    • Mac users receiving a message that ARD Agent is already running without any options to take a test:
      Go to System Preferences > Sharing File. When provided a list to uncheck the following: Remote Log In, Remote Management and Remote Apple Events. After unchecking 2 of the boxes the placement test should open.

"Browser not compatible" error message
This is often caused when a useropens the LockDown browser, then logs into ALEKS. To resolve this, please log into ALEKS from a regular web browser, like Chrome, Safari, or Firefox, and access your test/assignment. Seefor more info.

Lockdown Browser not launching from Chromebook Extension
While using the Respondus Lockdown browser extension for Chromebooks, if you get the message "Please install LockDown browser and then come back here to launch," please try disabling the two settings detailed below, then try to launch it once more.

How to turn offEnable verified accesson a Chromebook:

  • Go to Settings.
  • In the left sidebar on the Settings page, move to “Security and Privacy“.
  • Here, turn off the “Verified Access” toggle in the right pane. *Note: To turn off Verified Access, you just need to disable the toggle.*

How to turn offuse secure connection to look up siteon a Chromebook:

  • Go to Settings.
  • In the left sidebar on the Settings page, move to “Security and Privacy“.
  • Here, turn off the "use secure connection to look up site" toggle in the right pane. *Note: To turn off "use secure connection to look up site", you just need to disable the toggle.*
